Finding a skilled electrologist in NYC isn’t easy. New York state has no licensing or certification requirement to practice electrolysis or laser hair removal. This means anyone can purchase an epilator, watch a few YouTube videos and start poking people with electrified metal probes! Without licensing there is no insurance requirement, no office inspection, no hygiene or sanitation standards, no safety assessment, no state testing, no requirements for continuing education, etc. Scary, right?
So what should a person with unwanted hair look for in an electrologist?
TRAINING
At a minimum, you should seek an electrologist who has completed a certification program from an accredited electrology school. This is not a 2 day course! Any decent electrologist should be able to display a diploma from somewhere. This will give you reassurance that you will be treated by someone with significant knowledge of skin, hair, anatomy, hygiene and safety, and a level of professionalism.
BOARD CERTIFICATION & LICENSING
I can easily check this box. I am licensed in Massachusetts which means I trained for a year to learn electrolysis and laser hair removal. I have 1100 hours of training plus my years of business experience. THAT IS THE MOST IN THE NATION! I regularly attend in-person and remote lectures, seminars and training courses. I have to continue my education in electrolysis and laser hair removal to keep my Massachusetts state certification current. I am allowed by law to list my training as Laura Beasley, L.E.
PROFESSIONALISM
Do not hesitate to set up a consultation to assess for yourself whether this practitioner is a good fit for you. Signs of a well-run business include:
-A professional and courteous staff
-A waiting room that is separate from the treatment room
-An inviting, private space where you feel comfortable
-A provider who wears disposable gloves and a mask
-The use of medical-grade, single-use sterile probes for each treatment
-Modern equipment
-A treatment table that is draped with a single-use sheet or disposable paper
-A thorough consultation which includes your health history, medications, past hair removal experiences, a review of how electrolysis and/or laser removes hair, a discussion of the costs and time involved and (this is important) time to answer your questions and concerns. (I offer free consultations!)
I am committed to providing you the very best in electrolysis and laser hair removal in New York City. You deserve the best!
