Permanent Hair Removal

About electrolysis permanent hair removal

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal that is approved by the FDA.  A fine metal probe is inserted into the hair follicle and an electric current is applied to the base of the follicle, destroying the cells that produce hair. This process is repeated for each hair to be removed.

What does electrolysis feel like?

When treated by a trained professional using the latest equipment (me!), electrolysis is less painful than tweezing or waxing and laser hair removal. You may experience a tingling or warm sensation during the procedure and after, some redness or swelling. This usually abates after 30 minutes. If you are concerned about discomfort, take a pain reliever 30 minutes before your appointment. Arrive hydrated both inside and out. Avoid electrolysis just before and during your period. If you are particularly sensitive, there are topical anesthetics you can use before your treatment. Ask Laura for more information on over-the-counter and prescription topicals.

What areas can you treat with electrolysis?

Electrolysis is suitable anywhere except the hair inside your nose and any hair growing in mucous membranes. Your options are endless: eyebrows, chin, areola, abdomen, back, fingers and toes, bum crack, private parts, upper and lower lip, sideburns, shoulders, forearm, etc.

I cannot treat hair in a mole without a doctor’s note. Please see a dermatologist for hair growth in moles or other raised skin spots.

How many electrolysis treatments will I need?

It’s different for everyone which is why you will get a customized plan for you and your unwanted hair. Each area of the body has a unique density of hair follicles (highest density on the face, lowest density on the legs). In addition, each hair must be treated multiple times to eliminate the hair. If you have been waxing or tweezing, there is only 12-20% of treatable hair so you can expect some flushes of growth once you stop waxing. Regular visits and consistency are critical to see permanent results–this is not a selling point, it is a fact. Unless you have a hormone imbalance, are taking testosterone or are preparing for GAS/GCS, expect to see results in 3 – 12 months. And once your hair is gone, you are no longer my client–I love getting to that point! I’ll miss you but I’m so happy for you!

May I have electrolysis if I have a medical condition?

Electrolysis is safe for most people. However, there are some medical conditions that are contraindicated such as lupus and usage of Accutane. Before the treatment we will discuss your health and medical history in detail to ensure that electrolysis hair removal is right for you. If you are not sure, speak to Laura about your concerns.
